This is a promo I shot for La Maison du Paradou a beautiful and elegant boutique hotel in the south of France.

La Maison du Paradou is an oasis of calm and tranquility and the idea was to produce an inspirational promo rather than a promo that showed every room and feature in a methodical way.

It was all shot on the canon 5d mk 2 and canon 7d using sticks, a cinevate + follow focus handheld rig and a very small glidetrack for some dolly shots. Mostly and deliberately shot handheld. It was shot during a relatively busy period so the idea was to keep my “footprint” discrete and shoot at certain times so as not to affect guests. The dslr camera and rigging were ideal for this and produced a beautiful image.

I photographed Claudine recently. Claudine is a ballet dancer whom I have photographed before.

I am going to be shooting a very short film in which she will be the only subject No real story to it. Just (hopefully) a visually beautiful and emotional piece. Running for no more than 3 minutes. Music will be very important and that’s been decided. There’s a draft storyboard in place at this stage. In the film I hope to achieve the general look and drama I believe I achieved in this still image.

Why do this?

It’s the magic of movies. Plain and simple. And it is real magic not the kind of rabbit out of the hat magic. The moving image has always fascinated me so I want to try my hand at it.

The cinematography is a new venture for me which I am very excited about. I believe alot of what a stills photographer understands can translate very well into cinematography. There is composition, direction, the understanding of light, the building of a story. But it is different and will involve a steep learning curve and huge effort.

That’s why I am blogging this so I have to do it

Stay tuned…….
